Guiyang prioritized air pollution control during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–25), achieving a historic leap in air quality. Over the past five years, the city has recorded no days of heavy air pollution, with the proportion of days with good ambient air quality remaining above 98.9 percent.
According to national standards, good ambient air quality is defined as an air pollution index greater than 50 and less than or equal to 100.
Guiyang achieved a 100 percent rate of days with good ambient air quality for the first time in 2022. The city ranked among the top four of China's 168 key cities in 2024. The average concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) dropped from 23 micrograms per cubic meter in 2020 to 20 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024 – the lowest level since the implementation of the national air quality standards.
Guiyang has continued to strengthen its air governance system by establishing 26 urban air quality monitoring stations, 180 micro monitoring stations, and online monitoring systems for 67 air-related enterprises. The city has investigated over 1,500 potential pollution sources, helping it avoid approximately eight days of pollution each year.
Significant progress has also been made in key sectors. More than 20 major pollution-control projects have been implemented across key industries. New energy and clean energy buses now account for 100 percent of the public bus fleet and green travel in the central urban area has reached 69 percent. The green economy's share of the city’s GDP has risen to 50.2 percent, with ecological advantages increasingly translating into strong development momentum.
