To date, Wudang district in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has constructed 2,554 mu (170.27 hectares) of high-standard farmland, accounting for 51.8 percent of its target for the year.

The high-standard farmland construction is intended to improve the utilization efficiency of existing cultivated land resources, the output efficiency of land and the level of agricultural equipment.

According to Wang Hengying, head of the agricultural construction section of the Wudang agriculture and rural affairs bureau, high-standard farmland refers to flat land with concentrated contiguous areas, adequate facilities, fertile soil, healthy ecosystems and strong disaster resistance.

Such land is compatible with modern agricultural production and management methods and has a high and stable yield.

The construction of high-standard farmland is an effective way to solve the problems of shallow plow layers, soil compaction, soil acidification, salinization, soil degradation and inconvenient farming.

Wudang, one of the main urban areas in Guiyang, also has a vast rural area and strong and abundant cultivated land resources.

The construction of high-standard farmland is a reflection of Wudang's efforts to prioritize ecological and green development.

This year, Wudang plans to complete management tasks on 5,000 mu of high-standard farmland, mainly involving land leveling, irrigation and drainage, and field roads, among other things.

Six villages in Wudang district are included in the projects, the total investment of which stands at 17.5 million yuan ($2.50 million).

Local villagers, especially those recently lifted out of poverty, are being hired for the high-standard farmland construction projects, boosting their incomes.

As of Nov 18, around 60 people had worked for the farmland projects, and their per capita income is no less than 150 yuan per day.

Additionally, Wudang has invested a total of 12 million yuan in sewage treatment facilities and supporting pipe network upgrading projects in the high-standard farmland construction areas, in a bid to further improve the quality and efficiency of the farmland.
